Public Awareness Efforts
Goal: To gain public / local political support for LPA issues through education.

Feb. 5, 2005  Letter to City Council - essentially my introduction to them regarding light pollution issues (PDF).  A shortened (750 word) version was also published in a local weekly newspaper.  No response from City, but I continue to get lots of positive public feedback..

Apr. 13, 2005
Letter to the Editor re proposed proposed lighting for baseball field (PDF).  Worries basically unfounded as shielded lights installed. Mat still a little work to do with the pointing and shield adjustment as there may be some unnecessary spill into nearby yards.

March 2006
Letter to the editor regarding the fast-tracking of a former 10-year project to install acorn street lamps in Yorkton's downtown area ( PDF). Personal calls of support from public (continue to this day).

Astronomy Day in the Park: article in one of the local papers introducing Yorktonites to Astronomy (article).  A couple of dozen people showed in spite of the fact that the sky was generally obscured by cloud. As well, the City turned off the glaring tennis court floodlighting in that park for the evening to make the event possible.

Oct. 4, 2006
Letter to the City regarding various lighting plans, done in response to comments by the National LPA regarding surveying the situation across the country.  City Council copied (PDF).  Response prompt (6 days) and informative. Gives me good direction on what has to be done. One councilor e-mailed to ask if the City had responded.  (PDF

Former mayor Phil de Vos becomes Yorkton Business Improvement District manager.  YBID is the push behind the downtown acorn street lighting project.

Jim Huziak has a phone conversation and subsequent LPA package to Yorkton-Melville Conservative MP Garry Breitkreuz. The purpose was to make him aware of local, provincial and federal LPA issues, and hopefully help to take our case to Ottawa. He seemed to show genuine interest "I never thought of light as pollution before...".  (he also said he uses compact fluorescents in his offices wherever possible, so he's not totally unaware of energy waste). (read cover letter.

Feb. 9, 2007  Copy of Breitkreuz' letter to
Ministers Baird (Environment) & Lunn (Natural Resources), encouraging the inclusion of LPA issues in any federal environmental plan. (members read response*)

Further contacts in 2008 will be inserted shortly...
