Saskatoon Skatepark
How Lighting
Should Be Done!
This facility is located along Spadina Crescent South in Victoria Park in the Riversdale / King George area. The
skate park was designed by environmentally-minded landscape
architects van der Zalm + Associates inc. from Surrey,
BC*.
When SPLAC contacted
van der Zalm requesting designed-in LPA-friendly lighting, they said “Of course we will – doesn’t everybody?”. |

Well, everybody around here doesn’t!
But van der Zalm did an awesome job. The skate
park has only full cut-off (FCO) lights that produce no side light, no uplight and no glare. The lights have bottom glass plate diffusers to help spread light around. As can be seen in the photograph, the lights illuminate only the immediate area of the
skate park and a small border around it. They produce no light pollution and no light trespass onto any adjacent properties. The lights are at the proper illumination level for the facility and are not excessive in number. The lights are also on a timer and are extinguished in the late evening, discouraging nighttime use that could result in
vandalism and graffiti, but also saves energy in off
hours, and thus reduce GHG emissions. This is perfect lighting that has low operating cost and cost nothing to implement because responsible lighting was planned from the outset. The orange glow on the snow throughout the rest of the areas comes from poorly shielded cobrahead streetlights nearby.
